What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture uses hair-thin needles to stimulate the body’s natural healing ability. It is frequently used to reduce pain, inflammation, and stress as well as to promote an overall sense of wellbeing in the body. Some of the most common conditions we treat are back and neck pain, low back pain, insomnia, anxiety, fertility challenges, menopause and digestive issues.
What is the treatment like?
Most people find the treatment to be very relaxing. Some people fall asleep and other people often notice a feeling of heaviness, similar to meditation. However, there is no expected sensation when receiving acupuncture — what you feel during the session has little bearing on the effectiveness of the treatment.
Treatments usually last from 45-60 minutes and can also include the use of cupping or gua sha therapy as well.
Is it painful?
Believe it or not, acupuncture is not a painful experience. The needles that are used are 1/40 the size of a traditional hypodermic needle that is used for blood draws. These needles are hair-thin and are barely felt upon insertion.
What conditions can I use acupuncture to treat?
Acupuncture can used to treat any condition that is reflective of an imbalance in the body. Pain management is the most sought after service in our clinic but that is just one of the many benefits of acupuncture. Acupuncture has been proven valuable for treating the following conditions:
- Back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, joint pain, etc.
- Digestive issues
- Sleep disorders
- Menstrual irregularities
- Fertility challenges
- Menopausal symptoms
- Stress-related complaints
- And much more
How many treatments will I need?
Acupuncture works best when treatments are stacked closely together for the first few sessions and then scheduled further apart as your symptoms improve. Typically treatments are one time a week for the first few weeks and then gradually spaced out until we are on a maintenance plan or have healed the issue completely.
A course of treatments generally consists of 5-6 sessions for a more recent complaint and 10-12 for a more chronic condition, however most people will notice an improvement in their symptoms within the first few sessions. Your treatment plan will be discussed with you during your first appointment.
